Empirical Evidence of Regional Population Concentration in Europe , 1870 – 2000
نویسنده
چکیده
Although several studies have analysed the evolution of European population, as a global aggregate (Bairoch et al., 1988; Champion, 1993; Noin and Woods, 1993), very few have considered the regional distribution of population. Despite some noticeable contributions (e.g. Festy, 1979; Coale, 1986; Watkins, 1991), to date not much has been done in the way of conducting a detailed study of population densities, and little use has been made of thematic maps presenting historical data for the whole of Europe. This has largely been due to the technical difficulties involved in compiling and combining this cartographical data. Until very recently, there was no basic political map of European medium-scale historical administrative units readily available in digital format. This need has, however, now been – at least partially – met (Marti-Henneberg, 2002; Caramani et al., 2005). This map, which includes the administrative boundaries of Europe compiled at ten-year POPULATION, SPACE AND PLACE Popul. Is It More Important to Address the Issue of Patient Mobility or to Guarantee Universal Health Coverage in Europe?; Comment on “Regional Incentives and Patient Cross-Border Mobility: Evidence From the Italian Experience”
This paper discusses whether European institutions should devote so much attention and funding to cross-border healthcare or they should instead prioritise guaranteeing universal health coverage (UHC), inequalities and tackling the effects of austerity measures. The paper argues through providing the evidence in both areas of research, that the priority at European level from a public health an...
متن کاملRegional Incentives and Patient Cross-Border Mobility: Evidence from the Italian Experience
Background In recent years, accreditation of private hospitals followed by decentralisation of the Italian National Health Service (NHS) into 21 regional health systems has provided a good empirical ground for investigating the Tiebout principle of “voting with their feet”. We examine the infra-regional trade-off between greater patient choice (due to an increase in hospital services supply) an...
متن کاملA time series of infectious-like events in Australia between 2000 and 2013 leading to extended periods of increased deaths (all-cause mortality) with possible links to increased hospital medical admissions
Background and aims: Trends in deaths and medical admissions in the UK and Europe show evidence for a series of infectious-like events. These events have been overlooked by traditional surveillance methodologies. Preliminary evidence points to a rise in medical admissions in Australia around the same time as those observed in Europe, and this study was aimed to evaluate whether the deaths are o...

متن کاملRegional Wage Differentiation and Wage Bargaining Systems in the European Union
The theoretical literature has argued that a centralized wage bargaining system may result in low regional wage differentiation and high regional unemployment differentials. The empirical literature has found that centralized wage bargaining leads to lower wage inequality for different skills, industries and population groups, but the evidence on its impact on regional wage differentiation is s...
